 “Probably the most powerful singer to emerge from the white rock movement”, as TIME magazine put it, Joplin was more than a great artist. She was also a symbol of women’s liberation. A peaceful revolutionary who forged a path for other female performers to take the stage on their own terms. We’re talking Madonna, Lady Gaga and other women whose soulful voices and iconic outfits are now an inseparable part of music and fashion culture.

Joplin’s swagger ran right down to the core. She drove around in her psychedelic Porsche (which Dave Roberts modestly titled “The History of the Universe”) and arrived at Woodstock wearing her unforgettable tie-dyed velvet bell-bottoms and blouse. 3. THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY INDEED

Number 3 in our epic concert list may not be a Pink Floyd concert but it is one of our favorite moments in rock history. 

In 1973, a then-unknown singer recorded the unforgettable vocals to The Great Gig in the Sky. With no instructions other than “don’t use any words”, Clare Torry took the mic and - pretending she was an instrument - gave one of the most heartbreaking vocal performances ever heard.
